Description

In order to contextualize and treat the numerous and profound challenges to sexual morality and ethics (premarital sex, contraception in marriage, divorce, homosexual practice and the redefinition of marriage, artificial reproductive technologies, and sexual reassignment surgery, to name just a few), this course proposes, first of all, to develop an adequate comprehension of sexed, human nature, particularly within the context of various attacks upon its integrity (by S. Beauvoir, M. Sanger, J. Butler, etc.).  This, in turn, will serve as the basis for our subsequent treatment of the personalist perspective of Pope John Paul II and his famous theology of the body, without neglecting the Thomistic-Aristotelian tradition, focusing upon virtue, which it presupposes.  Particular attention will be directed to both the natural and the supernatural aspects of human sexuality and marital love, as the basis for an adequate foundation from which to examine and treat the numerous, and ever growing, challenges posed to sexual moral teaching today.
